Save Money in College
The summer is flying by, and before you know it you'll be entering your freshman year at college. You have scholarships and a financial aid package lined up, and you feel like you have a good handle on your finances. But you can still save yourself a lot of time, money, and worry by making sure you're conscientious and aren't spending unnecessarily when you get there! Consider these quick tips.
Take Advantage of Your School's Meal Plan
Everyone has to eat, and university meal plans can be an economical, no-fuss way for you to get the nutrition you need. Some universities offer a set number of meals per week at their various restaurants and dining halls, while others offer a prepaid debit plan. Some may even offer a combination of both. If you do opt for a meal plan, make sure you're using it. It doesn't hurt to go out for coffee with friends once in awhile or the occasional get-together at Applebee's, but the bottom line is that the meal plan is already paid for, so use it!
Buy Used Books When Possible
Most incoming freshmen are shocked at the price of college textbooks. Always look for used books whenever possible-these are considerably cheaper while still in usable condition. Also, you don't need to limit yourself to the university bookstore if you feel the prices are too steep. Sites like Textbooks.com and eCampus.com offer fast shipping and many of the textbooks you'll need for class. Also, at the end of the semester, don't forget to return any books you're no longer using to the bookstore. They'll offer you some extra cash for doing so-usually no more than 50% of what you originally paid-but it's still more money than you had when you came in the door!
Watch Your Frivolous Spending
While it may be a blast to go shopping for new clothes with friends or to catch the latest movie at the cinema, these seemingly small expenses can quickly add up. If you don't want to cut out these expenses entirely, you can take advantage of lower-cost options. For example, rather than shopping in the trendiest clothing stores, pay a visit to your local thrift shop. Often, you can find the latest trends at a much lower cost, simply because they were "gently used."
When making a trip to the movies, consider going to the matinee rather than a later showing. You'll save money and still get to catch the latest flicks. Alternatively, you could join an online rental service like NetFlix. Movies seem to be released on DVD and Blu-ray discs much faster these days, so you won't have to wait long!
Use Credit Cards Sparingly
The argument can be made that it's good to have credit cards in order to develop a credit history, but you need to make sure you don't overspend. In recent years, people have treated credit cards as a way to buy now and pay later (when they get a raise, a bonus, etc.). Never assume that the money will be there. Spend only what you have at your immediate disposal, and you'll be glad you did.
These are only a few tips to save money in college. Hopefully, they will give you other ideas as well and help you to reduce stress in your overall college experience.
